The AI Conversation We’re Actually Having With Clients

If you ask ten business leaders why their teams are nervous about AI, most will give you the same answer: people are worried about their jobs.

After 25 years of working with companies through major shifts in technology, booms and bust, I don’t think that’s really the conversation most organizations should be having.

The conversations we’re having with clients and internally, are different.

How do we move faster without losing consistency? How do we create more content without watering down the brand? How do we make sure someone is still asking the most important question: “Does this actually accomplish the goal?”

Because the biggest risk with AI isn’t that it replaces people. The bigger risk is that companies use AI to create more activity without creating more value.

I have seen this before. I started my career during the Y2K and dot-com era, and it was an incredible time to watch technology reshape business. Money was flowing into anything with “.com” attached to the name. Companies were being rewarded for being connected to new technology before many had proven the business model behind it.

Then reality caught up. A lot of those companies disappeared, but the important lesson is that the internet didn’t fail. It did exactly the opposite. It changed almost every part of how we communicate, purchase goods and operate.

The companies that survived were not simply the ones that adopted technology the fastest. They were the ones that figured out how to connect that technology to a real customer need and a real business outcome. I see a lot of parallels with AI today.

There is incredible innovation happening. AI is real, and companies that ignore it are going to fall behind. At the same time, companies that believe AI by itself is the strategy may learn the same lesson many organizations learned 25 years ago. Technology is a tool. What you build with it is what creates value.

At Kolbeco, we use AI every day. Not to replace people, but to make the work our people do even better. We see AI as another layer of quality control, research, insight, and accountability. It helps us test messaging, challenge assumptions, and identify when a brand voice starts drifting between a website, LinkedIn campaign, sales presentation, or advertising message.

AI cannot own the outcome. Every business leader has experienced moments where the stakes are higher — a major product launch, company announcement, leadership transition, or a campaign that needs to connect with the right audience the first time.

Those moments require more than execution. They require judgment.

AI can help every part of that process move faster. But it cannot walk into the room and say, “This isn’t really the problem we’re trying to solve.” That’s where leadership still matters. Strategy still comes first. Companies getting the most value from AI are not simply adding tools and hoping for efficiency. They are starting with strategy.

At Kolbeco, we’re excited about AI because we believe it gives strong teams more capability than ever before. The future of marketing isn’t AI replacing strategy. It’s smart people using better tools to create better outcomes. And that’s the AI conversation we believe more companies should be having.
