2nd Annual Honduran Street Party Run

For the second year in a row, Kolbeco is leading the efforts for the annual Honduran Street Party Run, a 5k, 10k and 1 mile fun run to benefit Timmy’s Mountain: Just Because We Care. The event will be held on Saturday, March 28th, with the start and finish line at Streets of St. Charles.

In 2013, the Timmy’s Mountain board of directors found themselves faced with increasing costs to feed and educate the children in the mountain community they serve. Board Member and Kolbeco Co-Founder Lauren Kolbe shared the challenge with husband and business partner Scott, an avid runner and triathlete, who suggested the idea of doing a run to help raise funds. Scott pitched the idea to the board, and plans were soon underway.

The first order of business was to create a theme and name the run. The Kolbeco team went to work and developed the brand for the Honduran Street Party Run, evoking the outdoor street celebrations that are prevalent in Latin America. Elements were brought in to bring the brand to life, including a “Beat the Pinata” contest where participants were challenged to beat the times of runners dressed as piñatas, and a Honduran-style cowboy hat as part of the swag package.

2014 marked the first year of the Honduran Street Party Run. Nearly 350 runners participated, and over $10,000 was raised for Timmy’s Mountain. Big River Running, the run’s timing company, named the 2014 Honduran Street Party Run as runner up in the Most Innovative Race category, and nominated it for the Best Race Debut Category.

“For 2015, we wanted to build on the momentum from our first year, and continue to create a unique and fun experience for runners,” said Race Director, Scott Kolbe. “People appreciated that we offered both a 5k and a 10k race, which is unique in our area, and enjoyed the distinctive swag and fun energy of Streets of St. Charles. Past runners shared the race with their friends and encouraged others to sign up, so we’re expecting an even bigger crowd of over 500 runners this year.”

All of the elements from the inaugural run are back this year, including “Beat the Pinata” and Honduran inspired swag.

Registration for the 2015 Honduran Street Party Run remains open, and race day registrations will be accepted. About Timmy’s Mountain: Just Because We Care

Timmy’s Mountain was founded in 2003 by Bob and Diane Wamhoff to feed and educate children in a small mountain village in Northern Honduras. To date, the organization has served hundreds of children and families, and has created hope for an entire village of people who had been otherwise discarded. The organization, whose larger vision is to create a legacy of education to reverse the cycle of poverty, currently feeds over 175 children, educates 166 students in the mountain’s elementary school, 40 in high school, and 9 in college.
